Malamute Alaskan

The origin is western Alaska (upper). It is known that the Malamute is closely associated with tribes living in the region. They have been assisting tribes in various activities such as hunting, working and also companionship , for thousands of years. The tribe was known as the mahlemuits. Both the tribes and the dog had a mutual dependence to each other that made them live and adapt to the harsh conditions prevailing the Arctic Circle.

Malamutes were obviously bred from wolves, but you couldn’t tell be their disposition. They are sweet , lovable dogs, the product of thousands of years of selective breeding. The Mahlemuits may have bred them that way…… since they had to live in igloos with them.

In 1896 when the gold rush of Klondike came, the breed became very famous when people trying to find prospective land to settle began further breeding the malamute. They are famous for helping Richard Byrd, an Admiral, to move towards the South Pole and they have also helped the miners who had come to Alaska in search of mines. These dogs were never considered a racing dog but rather an excellent dog for pulling freighting, huge loads from one village to the other.
